GARRIDO'S BOXING GYM...

GARRIDO'S BOXING GYMAlmost three thousand overpasses and viaducts mark the landscape of the twenty-million city of Sao Paulo. One of them, located in a municipal district in the eastern section, Zona Leste, became the site of the Garrido Boxing Academy, founded by a former professional boxer Nelson Garrido with a mission to get young people off drugs and crime through sport and education (a library stocked with books donated from everywhere is a part of each gym). The charismatic "O Louco dos Viadutos", the crazyman of viaducts, gained sympathy and respect from the locals, as well as from the municipal authorities, who support him in his idea of taking sport to the poor and marginalized population by establishing public gyms.People who frequent the Academy are of very different kind. There are regular workers and jobless guys, schoolboys (and schoolgirls) as well as homeless youngsters for whom this is the only place when they are safe from dangers of street life and can even get the only hot meal during the day, prepared by Mrs. Garrido. At the entrance, there is a kind of triumphal arc (a gift from a group of young designers from Holland who visited the place a few years ago) with a motto which can be translated roughly: "Come as a chap, leave as a proid person". #newbook #newbook2016 #gerhardsteidl #steidl #photobook #photography #tomaszgudzowaty #sport #amazing #brazil #box @melodymir @tomaszgudzowaty

MEXICO'S CAR FRENZY The small but lively and growing community of automotive enthusiasts in Mexico City consists of people who mostly have to work hard and full time to support their passion. but they are ready to devote any spare moment to their classic, fancy, custom tuned, muscle or otherwise exceptional cars. And they never miss any opportunity to gather together to appreciate and celebrate their precious vehicles, and to treat themselves to a (sometimes guilty) pleasure of driving. Streets, highways, parking lots, ramps, and even indoor spaces - any place can become a racing ground for a more or less spontaneous event. #mexico #amazing #newbook2016 #mexicocity #mexico_maravilloso #followme #photography #photobook #amazing #nangoldin #gerhardsteidl @melodymir @tomaszgudzowaty

They were the sporting legends of their time. But their time has past, and their years, advancing. Soon after the last May rainstorm the Serengeti plain rapidly changes into a dry wasteland. Migration remains the only way out for the enormous herds of wildebeest. Following the evading rain, the animal torrent flows eastward in the direction of Lake Victoria, and then to the north, to the Masai Mara Reservation in Kenya, where an escarpment of tectonic origin stops the very last of rains. On the way the animals must cross the largest obstacle – the Mara River.

In places like the shipbreaking yards in Bangladesh the word labor resounds with its ancient meaning of toil and hardship. The industry has moved from Europe and then Far East to Southern Asia, where manpower is still cheaper than technology. The workers dimantle huge carrier ships into re-usable parts and scrap metal almost with their bare hands.

They eat a simple breakfast: rice, a little chicken, tea with condensed milk. They drink a can of cheap energy drink with a Bengal tiger on its packaging, then put on their sandals, a shirt or T-shirt, some loose cotton trousers or the skirt known as a lungi.

From its beginning sport has had a connection to the pursuit of the ideal human form. In ancient Olympia, the esthetic contemplation of all-oiled, athletic, well-defined bodies of athletes was as important as the measurable outcome of any competition. Among all sports, bodybuilding is most overtly focused on physical human beauty, leaving apart any other reasons for gaining muscles, but the bodybuilders can achieve their dream physique only with hard work and dedication.

This is not a trick. This is not a supernatural power. This is not pure physics of the human body, too. This is a unity of mind and flesh, not just control. Among dozens and hundreds of kung-fu adepts in the Shaolin monastery, there were few could could attempt this exercise, and only one who really did it. Short fast run, his feets against the wall, and in a certain moment, fighting down instinct to protect himself, he straightened his arms along his sides, transforming himself into a quiet walker, setting off on a journey. That's how „Every journey begins with the first step” was made. Shaolin monastery in Henan province, China, 2002.

Józef Grudzień had a great career in boxing as the winner of two Olympic medals (gold in Tokyo 1964, silver in Mexico City 1968), coach and member of the Polish Olympic Committee, but at heart he remained an amateur in the noblest sense of the term, never seduced by the glitz and money of Big Sport. After he retired, he set up a foundation to build a home for elderly sportspeople in the Olympic Training Center in Spala, Poland, and is also a local social activist in his neighborhood, north of Warsaw. A great man of sport but also an advocate for those less fortunate, and on top of all this - an extremely nice, modest person.

Friday July 3, 2015 - the opening...

Friday July 3, 2015 - the opening of my exhibition at the National Gallery of Art (Państwowa Galeria Sztuki) in Sopot. This was my fourth time showing there, but for the first time I was exhibiting so many wildlife-themed works at once. The evening was also a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends – like Zbyszek Buski, the director of the Gallery, and journalist Piotr Sarzyński from „Polityka” weekly - and make new acquaintances. Among the distinguished guests attending the event were, among others, President of the City of Sopot Mr. Jacek Karnowski, art critic Mrs. Monika Małkowska, and actress Mrs. Krystyna Łubieńska. Huge thanks to my family members who celebrated the occasion with me, to Zbyszek and the gallery staff for setting this up, and obviously a special thanks to the audience who made the show a lot of fun for us. Everybody is invited to visit the exhibition until October 4. and here are a handful of photos from the opening (courtesy of PGS).

The Dream Wedding of Melody and Tomasz by Vanessa Beecroft for Vogue.
Vanessa does not need an introduction. Italian by birth and education, she lives in Los Angeles and gives her famous performances worldwide. The events involve live female models, usually nude, posing for hours in elaborated compositions inspired by such disparate sources as the tradition of classical Western painting, and the high fashion of today. In her art she makes an extensive use of video and photography. This hieratic (in many senses) composition was created in Rome in 2014, and echoes another work by Vanessa – a very personal one, because showing her own wedding party.

The southern elephant seal is the largest...

The southern elephant seal is the largest carnivore living today. The seal gets its name from its giant size and the large proboscis of the adult males, resembling an elephant's trunk. According to an 18th-century description, the "Monsters of the Deep" make "dreadful Howlings and Voices which seem too terrible for Human Ears". Indeed, they can be extremely noisy and very dangerous, especially during the mating season. due to their size and body weight (4,5 m in length, 1,5-3,0 tons), but also their unexpected swiftness. They can move faster than a human. Elephant seals live in enormous herds consisting of stable and non-overlapping harems, each one of them counting one male and up to 150 females. They spend most of time diving as deep as 500 meters below the ocean's surface, but due to the inaccessibility and darkness of their foraging areas practically all observations about them have been made on land. The animals are highly territorial on often have bloody fights between them, however the biggest danger for this species used to be (again) the man hunting them for fat, so that they came to near extinction in the 19th century. On South Georgia the elephant seal were aggressively hunted until 1964. Now the species is strictly protected and its population has reached a safe number of 700 000 individuals. South Georgia is one of their biggest sanctuaries.

They did it for fun, but there was a serious thing behind the performance: hard work and utmost commitment. The essential values of all that sport is about.

The charismatic "O Louco dos Viadutos", the crazyman of viaducts, gained sympathy and respect from the locals, as well as from the municipal authorities, who seldom refuse permit requests for events held under Garrido's name.

I must have been very lucky; coincidence helped me often. And perchance a little bit of patience, too. The annually repeated drama of the wildebeest and zebra migration on a circular route through Tanzania's Serengeti to Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve in search of food and water has its climax at the crossing of Mara River. It took me quite some time of waiting, and a few days of intense work to catch those images which I titled „Paradise Crossing”.

In the same year 1999 when I won my first World Press Photo award, I spent two weeks at the banks of Mara River between Tanzania and Kenya waiting for the natural world's most spectacular drama – the crossing of the river by wildebeest herds during their annual migration. This photo was appreciated by the contest's jury one year later.

"Yet nature is made better by no mean
But nature makes that mean: so, over that art
Which you say adds to nature, is an art
That nature makes. ...this is an art
Which does mend nature, change it rather, but
The art itself is nature."

Three months later we are in the arid, yet rich landscape of the Namib desert. The billowy blackness of Melody's dress dominates the frame, but it is her gaze turned towards me that closes the scene. I hold it for a moment before releasing the shutter. Passion and tenderness – all this in her eyes.

Cheetahs are born without the killing instinct. They can be also quite sociable animals, as I experienced myself sixteen years ago when traveling Africa. A cheetah with two cubs (a lonely mother, typically for the species) got accustomed to use my car as an observation point, and often left her children under my supervision when she was out for hunting. One day I witnessed the cubs learning their first lesson of killing. It was the last moment in their life when they were still unsure what to do with the pray... The photo won for me my first ever award at World Press Photo in 1999.

I went to Namibia carrying lots of images in mind. I left the country with fresh ones, some of which I have managed to capture on film. Perhaps I should say we instead of I, as those images do not convey my exclusively own emotions anymore. They belong to Melody as much as to myself. A true mind-enhancing experience.

Indian kusti wrestlers pouring sand on themselves before their daily training session. The layer of sand and oil is to lessen the opponent's grip. Nada Kusti is an ancient form of wrestling, still practiced in the state of Karnataka in gyms called „garadi”, featuring red clay arenas and equipped with traditional tools. Today, the number of functioning garadi in Mysore, the ancient capital of Karnataka, has fallen to less than ten. The rest have been shut down or transformed into Western-style fitness clubs.

Horse racing is a part of Naadam, a Mongolian festival that has been celebrated since the times of Genghis Khan. It is most recently held every July to commemorate the People's Revolution. Traditionally, the jockeys are children in these races. It is said that Mongols learn to ride before they can walk and feel safer on horseback than on the ground. Boys and girls as young as five are used as jockeys because a Naadam race is not a test for riders, but for horses. However, the races can be very dangerous, with hundreds of horses running at great speeds across a steppe of 12 to 28 kilometers. In preparing for Naadam, children take part in repeated practice races and help the trainers take care of the racehorses. According to some estimates, 150 to 180 thousand horses with more than 30 thousand child jockeys compete in over 500 races each year.

Naadam Portraits

The small but lively and growing community of automotive enthusiasts in Mexico City consists of people who mostly have to work hard and full time to support their passion. but they are ready to devote any spare moment to their classic, fancy, custom tuned, muscle or otherwise exceptional cars.

Skateboarding is more than a sport – it's a...

Skateboarding is more than a sport – it's a unique and dynamic culture which combines demanding physical exertion with fashion, design, graphic art, and even filmmaking. It was probably originated in the late 1940s in California by surfers, and now is one of the most popular recreational activies among kids and youth around the world. Skateboarders use the urban environment as a huge playground, but since the 1970s, skateparks have been constructed specifically for their use in order to bring the activity under more control. Indeed, skaters always had a lot of negative press, being portrayed as dirty, noisy, aggressive, and trouble-making.
The darker side of skateboarding is especially evident in countries like Mexico, where violence and organized drug-related crime are ubiquitous, especially in poor and congested urban areas. The images were taken in dangerous neighboorhoods of the Distrito Federal, such as Neza and Tepito. The skaters are of different age and background. They themselves define skateboarding as the rebellious, creative celebration of independence – a realm of unrestricted freedom.

'Keiko' among the Most Beautiful German Books of...

Stiftung  Buchkunst (German Art Book Foundation)  awarded its annual prizes for the most beautiful books that were published in Germany in the recent twelve months. Die schönsten deutschen Bücher 2013 is the name of one of the most valued recognitions within the industry, that are awarded to publishers, designers, artists and typographers of books of outstanding aesthetic quality to conform with the publication's character and contents.

One of the book awarded in the 'Art Books, Photography Books, and Catalogues' category is Keiko by Tomasz Gudzowaty (photographs), and Witold Szabłowski (text) from a worldwide renowned German publisher Hatje Cantz. Keiko is a story about a one-of-a-kind place and about the people who shape it. The artist documented the work and lives of shipbreakers in Chittagong, the second-largest city in Bangladesh, where thirty to forty percent of the seven hundred ocean-going ships taken out of service every year are scrapped. The book reminds us that despite the progress of civilization, work can still be a physical challenge that may provide a livelihood but at the same time robs people of any scope to change the status quo.

On May 14, the winners of the Polish Photo Competition "Grand Press Photo" were announced in Warsaw, with first first prize for the Photo of the Year 2008 going to Tomasz Gudzowaty. The awarded picture shows a group of children from a private acrobatic school in Wuqiao County in Hebei Province, China.
